Definition Essays: Simple Writing Guidelines for Beginners
A definition essay can be considered as one of the variations of descriptive essays, in which description is replaced by a formal definition of specific term, notion or concept.
Although definition essays can be considered relatively easy, as the writing process is mostly straight forward and does not imply any controversy, there are several guidelines that should be kept in mind when writing such essays. In that regard, this article provides an explanation of some of the guidelines on writing a definition essay.
Overview
As it is implied from its title, a definition essay is an essay which main purpose is explaining the meaning of a term to the reader. The difference between a definition essay and a dictionary entry can be seen in the extended explanation part, which is combined with a personal commentary. The purpose of definition essays implies that common and accepted definitions are used.
Guidelines
The main guidelines that should be considered when writing a definition essay include the following points:
- The defined term should be clearly indicated at the beginning of the definition essay. Abstract introductions should be avoided.
- Provide as much explanation as possible. Although they are named definition essays, the readers’ main objective is understanding the term, and thus, if merely a definition was needed, they would have turned to encyclopedias.
- Nothing defines a concept better than an illustrative example. In that regard, providing several examples is essential, and if applicable, graphs and illustrations can be used as well.
- Provide an organized structure for the essay, in which the ideas will logically flow from one to another, e.g. formal definition, explanation, example, implementation and use, etc.
- Provide reputable resources for the defined term. Avoid using resources which provide less common explanations and controversial opinions.
