Sustainability Programs of Coca-Cola, Kohl’s, and Linde

Introduction

The first report under discussion is the report of Coca-Cola Company that was issued in 2019. The company focuses on social and environmental responsibilities: people’s health and climate change. According to the Coca-Cola Business and Sustainability Report (2019), they decreased the amount of added sugar by 4% in 2019. This priority is an expected one because there is a worldwide tendency among people to keep fit and monitor their health. In addition, according to the firm’s report (2019), they decreased GHG emissions (greenhouse gases) by 24% in 2019, and the goal is 25% by 2030. Thus, reduction of carbon footprint is the central issue for the company.

The measures taken by the company fit some of the categories in the Mt. Sustainability Model. First of all, the board focuses on reducing the waste of the company and implements climate-friendly practices. They are as follows: replacing packaging with recyclable items and providing Freestyle Units, which promote reusable cups. Secondly, some company practices aim at improving people’s livelihood, for instance, encouraging smallholder farmers to cooperate with them or women farmers’ training to support equality in society. Finally, the board elaborates on the water management program to use the resource more effectively by improving quality and its reuse.

The critical information of the report involves the further steps to sustainable business and the company’s development, including a focus on human rights, water availability, combating climate change, and ending hunger worldwide. On the other hand, it does not include all the fronts of the Mt. Sustainability Model, for example, alternative sources of energy, management of transportation, and logistics. The goals are straightforward and ambitious; however, based on the report’s statistics, the company has already achieved some of its goals and aims at economic empowerment.

Kohl’s CSR Report

The report mostly focuses on social sustainably; however, there is a chapter devoted to some environmental issues and possible solutions. First, the company concerns ethics at the workplace, health matters, and its employees’ general well-being. One of the strategies to support social sustainability is bringing diversity and inclusion to the company. Kohl’s cooperates with various non-profit organizations, such as Black Professionals Business Resource Group (BRG), diverseAbilities BRG, and Women’s BRG. Moreover, they focus on climate change, recycling as well as sustainable sourcing; as a result, both social and environmental issues are under discussion in the report.

The company’s priorities fit some of the fronts in the Mt. Sustainability Model, such as reducing of energy consumption, use of electric vehicles, and support of humans’ livelihood and wellness. One example of these practices is plastic recycling: nearly seven million pounds of plastic bags and wrap was recycled in 2018. The Kohl’s CSR report states (2019) that the firm uses LED (Light Emitting Diode) fixtures in many locations to save electricity. The company promotes electric transportation and owns nearly 230 electric vehicle charging spots. Eventually, Kohl’s merchandise profit goes to non-profit organizations to support the health of families in their community or arrange programs for stress management and self-regulation.

The information that can be learned from the report is that the company’s core values include care for people, community families, and environmental sustainability. The company covers most of the Mt. Sustainability Model fronts and provides several solutions for further development and sustainable business. Moreover, the firm aims at creating a business model, the central idea of which will support social and environmental sustainability.

Linde Sustainable Development Report

The final report under discussion is the Linde’s report, industrial gases and engineering company. The firm’s primary focus is the safety and development of people, energy and climate change, and sustainable productivity. All the topics are expected from such a company, and their main goals cover social and environmental sustainability. To specify, they contribute projects to support minorities and equality, reduce electricity use, provide drinking water for poor communities, and promote zero-waste programs.

The report covers some of the Mt. Sustainability Model fronts, for instance, improving people’s livelihood. They target safety at the workplace, for example, reducing traffic incidents by 20%; moreover, they implant ethics, compliance, and integrity programs for building safe culture and overall well-being of employees (Linde, 2018). A few environmental measures are integrated into the company’s policy, such as reducing GHG emissions by 6.2% in 2018. The firm also provides a sustainable productivity strategy, which includes water supplies management and zero waste programs. Nonetheless, the report does not mention any changes that would cover other fronts of the Model, such as renewable energy sources and transportation management.

In summary, the report is informative and provides some targets to involve stakeholders and customers in sustainable management and business practices. The firm covers primary social and environmental responsibilities, which fit the Sustainability Model to reduce waste and people development. The sustainable growth measures they aim at implementing in the company’s policy are effective and promote significant change in both society and the environment.
