Australia, China, and Japan Hotels: Leadership Styles and Skills

Executive summary

Leadership is the main aspect that drives an organization in order to achieve its core functions and objectives. Leaders execute and ensure that all staff officials follow proper guidelines. Leaders have the challenge of bringing all the personnel from a varied background to strike a balance and work towards boosting the company’s operations. It is clear that leadership skills are significant to propel an organization, which is constantly boosted by training and proper motivational approaches provided to the staff. Accord Hotel guests’ also come from varied regions such as China, Australia, and Japan of which leadership styles employed by this organization need to take into consideration the concern of their clients so that they welcome everyone without no prejudice.

Guests from diversified regions such as Australia, China, and Japan

Accord Hotel is an international organization and despite it being based in Australia, it receives members from across the world especially from the developed countries. Every year, these three countries have individual who like visiting places mainly over the summer of even in winter seasons. Australia for instance, hosts a number of remarkably talented, highly respected, as well as deeply endorsed international visitors. The Australian guests differ from main educators and scholars to religious and spirituals managers to musical and cultural identities. These guests despite being home or known by Accord Hotel, they also travel throughout the country spreading their colorful and varied professionals to the different Jewish societies. On the other hand, Australian population is significant and thus, the need for the management to ensure they cope with such increased number of local population in providing all their needs. This is because by keeping and attracting the locals, the hotel will have advertised itself and, therefore, foreign guest would just flock the hotel because of good reputation.

For the Japanese guests, how to handle them by managers may be different since most of the individuals understands better the American culture and language as compared to Americans do the Japanese. The hotel administration has to know that most Japanese studied these cultures and languages through reading books. Due to technological advancement and the nature of their country, most of the Japanese guests received by the Hotel are businesspersons. These individuals need to be treated differently from those tourists and the management should consider those aspects for them to satisfy and ensure the guests come back again.

On the other hand, guests from China are also so diversified that if not treated well, some of their needs may not be satisfied. For instance, most Chinese have their own special food that must be prepared as per their specifications. Since Accord is an international Hotel, it will be the preferred chose for Chinese. However, a variety of entertainment must be accessible. Chinese guests also prefer being treated by the host with remarkable kindness alongside respect and being allowed to undertake what they prefer. For instance, most Chinese guests are smokers and would smoke anywhere they feel like. The manager, therefore, needs to consider such background information in order to develop a balance and know how to handle the guests separately.

Training and Development

Training and development are an area whose main area of concern is organization’s activities, which aim at fostering the individual’s performance as well as groups like managers, team leaders, supervisors, and employees. This activity is crucial for production of change. It involves a person’s skill or addition of a new skill, which in turn brings the desired changes within the organization (Parker, 2001).

Training is also aimed at bringing growth and development of workers, building self-confidence, and commitment of the employees to bring solution to the organizational problems (Sims & Quatro, 2005).

In the Accord hotel, orientation training should be the first training program to be offered to both the managers and the employees. This is because all employees including the managers are new to the hotel. Thus, it is desired to give them basic knowledge, understanding, and skills needed for successful job performance (Montana 2008, p. 54).

Remedial training will be essential to the Accord Hotel employees. Qualified and well-trained employees will perform more efficiently being managed by leaders, who utilize appropriate leadership style.

Leadership Styles

The success of any organization has a direct link to how it is led and guided by its leaders. Therefore, it is significant for Accord to ensure the appropriate form of leadership that will lead to achievement of company’s objectives. For instance, democratic and bureaucratic leadership forms are the examples, which Accord needs to implement.

Bureaucratic leadership style is recommended for the company since this style entails management by the book where everything is done according to the set policy (Adair, 1998). In this study case, it is appropriate for the management since all employees including the managers and the supervisors are new and thereby do not understand certain procedures and activities in which the company operates (Chemers, 1997).

The employees are informed about the running of the company that affects their day-to-day affairs. In this case, the manager gathers information from the employees before making a decision (Miller, 2008 p. 71). Leadership styles will only be fruitful if the employees in the senior and junior level of management are highly motivated, and are well represented from all the regions that clients come from. Motivational techniques and reward structures are normally utilized to improve an employees’ attitude towards their duties in the organization.

Motivation Techniques and Reward Structures

Motivation is the psychological feature that aims at raising individual desire towards a certain goal that is achieved through several approaches, which include social, cognitive, and behavioral factors. Its main aim is to maximize productivity and performance. Therefore, the Accord should adopt appropriate techniques and reward structures for their employees. I will recommend that superiors adapt the following techniques (Plencioni, 2002).

Montana (2008) argues that one of the main motivational techniques is made through promotion of employees in an organization. In case of any future vacancy in the Accord, the management should consider utilizing the work force from company’s staff to fill the vacancy.

Monetary incentives given to the employees boost productivity of each employee, reduce absenteeism, and influence on the success of the business. Other non-monetary incentives, such as recognition, responsibility, and advancement, have proved to be the potent employee motivator (Parker, 2001 p. 38), which is appropriate for the hotel to adopt. Other motivational techniques recommended for the hotel include peer recognition, handout achievement awards, provision of adequate breaks, and provision of compensation plan for company’s productivity (Montana, 2008).

Performance Management Systems

Management systems are methods used by an organization for the employee’s performance. The company should adapt the following systems for easier decision-making.

The Accord can try management by objective system whereby the manager and employees point out individual employee’s goals and relate it to the overall business. According to Plencioni (2002), this system is oriented to attain the organizational objectives and its target, which strives to achieve these goals successfully through individual and common effort. Each employee will look for ways of achieving these goals and in the event increase the overall performance of the organization. This is done through relaying regular feedback in accordance to the management structure of the organization (Chemers, 1997).

Combined manager-employee appraisal performance and management system can also be utilized at the Accord. Adair (2009 p. 46) argues that this system combines both employee self-evaluation and manager feedback to construct a balanced performance appraisal. It provides room for the agreement between the employee and the manager, thereby such approach encourages teamwork.

Ways of Encouraging Teamwork

In pursuit of the objectives of an organization, teamwork is crucial in utilizing resources and facing its challenges. Teamwork can be improvised in the workplace through several ways including the following. Rewarding groups for their exemplary performance can improvise teamwork through implementation of recognition programs, which work (John, 2001). A diversified team also is a motivation in itself because workers learn from each other and share the way word is carried out from various regions. The management must ensure they get personnel from such places as Japan, China, and Australia where technology is high and workers’ expectations need to be boosted as well to run the firm best.

Enhancement of teamwork can be achieved with the help of engagement in social activities. The fact the guests come from different areas means that workers such regions need to be employed in order to ensure visitors feel at home while at the same time motivating them. In addition, sport activities may even be introduced for it to be more involving (Herzberg, 2008).

Clear guidelines for the work carried out by members in most cases enhance teamwork. Consultation and ability should be utilized before and during sharing of responsibilities. It is also crucial to identify existing problems and reduce conflict in order to enhance teamwork. Any strife or problem should be communicated and handled collectively as soon as they arise. Black and Moutin (2004, p. 65) state that mediation of disputes in the organization also boosts teamwork by enabling members to solve their issues collectively, productively and efficiently. Effective communication directly with the parties involved in the disputes entirely solves the issue at hand.

Other recommendations

The Accord can be run efficiently by having the right personnel performing duties in their field of specialty. Qualified personnel can be sourced through proper selection and recruitment process. The recruitment team should keep in mind the interests of guests who come from different regions such as Australia, China, and Japan. This is essential because all the visitors need varied treatment, and personnel from different regions understand such issues better. All the departments in the hotel should also be well equipped for better service delivery.
