Employee Motivation: Extrinsic and Intrinsic Factors

The article seeks to discuss the pay-for-performance payment model and the things that motivate human beings. According to Mackenzie (2018), employee compensation does not only revolve around money; therefore, business leaders need to identify the various factors that influence performance. In this case, it might be necessary to focus on both extrinsic and intrinsic factors of motivation. Extrinsic employee motivation can be achieved using touchable rewards or through the benefits an individual seeks to get by performing exemplary work. An employee can get motivated by receiving praise from their leaders and other team members. Millennials and females have a preference for additional benefits in the workplace rather than receiving a pay rise. When people receive money as a motivator, they are not creative thus perform poorer than those rewarded using pride.

Mackenzie also highlights the various factors that enhance intrinsic motivation among employees. One of the sources of intrinsic motivation is when an employee helps a team member to address challenges. This type of motivation also results from workers’ desire to perform their duties since they feel that they create value for themselves and other people in their organizations. Inspiration among employees can also be created through positive emotions that make human beings feel worthy. In this case, employers should allow employees to put in their maximum potential and achieve goals since they invest in themselves. Workers can be inspired to work better to achieve more significant goals in life.

Business leaders need to have practical approaches that help to create motivation in their workforce. According to Mackenzie (2018), business leaders need to have effective communication strategies to ensure that all employees know the benefits available to them. This ensures that workers understand what is required of them to achieve the benefits. Leaders themselves are also a source of motivation when they praise employees for handling their duties and responsibilities as needed.

Understanding of the Article

One of the things I learned from reading the article is that business leaders need to identify the various factors that enhance motivation among their employees. Human beings have different motivators that improve their productivity and desire to achieve more. Inspiration to achieve more in the workplace can even be achieved by allowing workers to work collaboratively handling duties and operations. Business leaders must ensure that all employees know about the benefits they can enjoy for exemplary performance in their workplace. Motivation allows employees to put in maximum efforts to receive rewards and achieve desired goals in life.

The article also indicates that money should not motivate employees in their workplace since it inhibits creativity. Workers who are not creative enough cannot handle faced challenges to come up with solutions. This shows that there is a need for employers to identify the various sources of motivation in their workforce and seek to fulfill them. A pay rise after an employee portrays good performance has been used by many businesses as a motivator; therefore, there is a need to develop new strategies. Workers who are motivated work their level best to achieve their goals and create value for their organization.

Opinion About the Author

I agree with the view presented by Mackenzie that different people have varying sources of motivation that need to be identified and addressed. Business owners should not rely on monetary rewards only to build motivation in their employees. Mackenzie (2018) highlights that helping another person can motivate human beings in the workplace. Assisting another person creates a perception of value and recognition as being the best. In this case, a person can put more effort into ensuring that they gain more skills and knowledge to help other people solve their challenges.

Receiving praise in the workplace also motivates individuals to work more since they consider themselves superior and want to maintain the perception. I also agree with the author that a person who desires to do their job well can also act as a motivator. In such a case, an employee puts in maximum effort to address faced challenges to enhance the possibility of achieving their goals. The desire is not influenced by other benefits that an employee can receive for portraying a good performance.

Importance of the Topic

The knowledge gained when learning the topic will be of great benefit in my human resource career life since I will be able to identify the various sources of motivation among employees and formulate strategies to fulfill them. The article highlights that one should not only rely on monetary rewards to build motivation. I will also ensure that I have an effective communication strategy that will inform employees about the benefits at their disposal for performing well. This will ensure that all employees know about what is required of them and do all they can to achieve it. According to the information gained from the topic, I will have to empower managers to appreciate team members who perform their duties well. Praise alone can be a great source of motivation in the workplace.
