Four-Day Workweek Benefits, Productivity, and Work-Life Balance Trends

Abstract

The four-day workweek trend originated in 1965 when the British company, Roundpay Metal Finishers, introduced it. A shortened workweek has been shown in several studies to improve productivity and creativity. Moreover, some studies indicate that this deployment boosts employee engagement.

Many studies have shown that professionals with young children tend to save money on babysitters, pursue new hobbies, enroll in continuing education courses, and start volunteering. A better work-life balance is achieved as a result of the four-day workweek. Only activities that require client scheduling, synchronized procedures, or billable hours can have work hours reduced without compromising efficiency or profitability.

Introduction

SpurIT, which has operations in Belarus and Lithuania, has been operating on a compressed schedule for over two years. The HR Director observes that this program has not influenced the company’s operational profit or customer base. On Fridays, some developers research new frameworks and prepare the library for new personnel, which boosts productivity.

The four-day workweek trend began in 1965 when the British business Roundpay Metal Finishers implemented the four-day workweek. This method began to be widely discussed worldwide five years ago. The notion was popularized in 2018 by the New Zealand non-profit organization 4 Day Week Global (Christian, 2022). The organization encourages businesses worldwide to participate in the experiment to implement a four-day workweek.

They provide companies with how-to guidelines on how to organize this process, and if problems arise, 4 Day Week Global hires specialists to assist in resolving them. The concept of a four-day workweek is familiar: in France, the workweek was reduced to 35 hours over 20 years ago to improve residents’ work-life balance (Christian, 2022). Proponents claim it has helped create jobs and promote work-life balance.

Critics, on the other hand, argue that it has harmed the competitiveness of French firms. The concept of a four-day workweek has been revived in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. After the quarantine, when many companies switched to a remote format, not all employees were ready to return to offline conditions. In response, organization owners are offering employees a shorter workweek to compromise with them and not lose their talent.

Review of Efficiency Studies

Henley Business School Survey

The concept of a four-day workweek is also being considered in the United Kingdom. Henley Business School polled 505 managers and over 2,000 employees in UK organizations to determine the impact of a four-day workweek on the workforce (Marmot, 2020). The survey findings show both the pros and downsides of this strategy.

Half of those polled said they had already implemented a four-day workweek for part- or full-time employees, and that employee satisfaction and illness rates had increased. Since the advances, these organizations save almost ÂŁ92 billion each year, or 2% of their total revenue (Marmot, 2020). Most of the employees polled reported a definite relationship between a four-day workweek and a higher quality of life.

The majority of Generation Z and Generation X respondents found this practice particularly appealing, as they utilize their time off not to rest, but to enhance their abilities, volunteer, and earn additional money. Two-thirds (67%) of Generation Z respondents indicated that the four-day workweek influenced their decision about where to work (Marmot, 2020). In organizations with shorter workweeks, over two-thirds (64%) of managers observed an increase in staff productivity and quality of work, attributed to fewer absences due to sickness and improved general well-being (Marmot, 2020). Another advantage was reduced commute time to and from work.

Numerous studies have shown that a shorter workweek has a positive impact on productivity and creativity. Furthermore, several studies suggest that this deployment increases employee engagement. Employees, for example, were considerably less prone to wasting time and searched for methods to be more productive on their own, so that the decreased work hours would not result in the surrender of goals, according to Burchell.

Most chose to hold shorter meetings without off-topic conversations, introduce periods of intense work without interruptions, create email etiquette guidelines, and begin preparing day-to-day task checklists (Kelliher, no date). Many researchers have also found that professionals with young children save money on babysitters, develop new interests, enroll in continuing education courses, and start volunteering (Christian, 2022). As a result of the four-day workweek, a more balanced work-life approach is achieved.

Perpetual Guardian Experiment

Another experiment, performed by the New Zealand business Perpetual Guardian, lowered the number of working days and hours. The volume of working hours for a five-day work week was 37.5 hours, while for a four-day work week, the amount was already 30 hours (Voglino et al. 2022). Following an analysis of the findings, it was shown that employee productivity improved in proportion to the reduction in hours. As a result, employees worked more actively, and there was no loss in productivity. Surprisingly, the length of working meetings decreased significantly, and employees began to save time to complete their jobs on schedule. Employee stress levels decreased from 45% to 38% (Voglino et al., 2022).

In contrast, the indication of work-life balance improved from 54% to 78% (Voglino et al. 2022). Other indications have improved as well: the company’s climate has gotten friendlier. Staff turnover was reduced as a result of the enhanced team climate, making it more straightforward to retain personnel.

For workers who must execute specific duties, the amount of time spent should not be an issue, as long as the work is performed to a high quality. Work hours can only be reduced without affecting efficiency and profitability in jobs that involve client scheduling, synchronized procedures, or billable hours. A shorter workweek will only benefit businesses that are already relatively lean (Clark et al. 2020). Poor working conditions, where people have been performing tasks for too long without being fairly compensated, were one of the reasons for the Great Layoff.

Conclusion

Thus, the concept of instituting a four-day workweek requires serious consideration; it is preferable to proceed by trial and error. Such a trip will assist in understanding under what conditions a shortened working week would be successful and when the advantages may exceed the drawbacks. Countries and organizations that can adopt the four-day workweek first will have a competitive edge if they can do it in a way that maximizes the long-term well-being of their people while minimizing short-term increases in labor and operating expenses. However, not all occupations can be converted to a four-day work schedule, which should also be considered when implementing this innovation.
