Leadership Styles That Promote Effective Communication

Introduction

Effective negotiation skills and the capacity to employ various successful communication styles and behaviors are crucial for both daily life and the workplace. Each person must grow and progress continuously in order to reach their objectives. The assertive communication style, in my opinion, is the most productive and successful since it simultaneously incorporates a number of beneficial aspects of other styles. However, a person must also acquire behavioral features in order to enhance their current communication style. For instance, the capacity to listen, trust what others are saying, and articulate oneself clearly.

Leadership Styles for Effective Communication

People become successful leaders and communicators after many communication practices, and going through difficulties. To mitigate this process, several functional behavioral patterns have been identified that can significantly improve the process of negotiations with people. Moreover, it is essential to understand and adapt communicative qualities to the needs of both the situation and the interlocutors (BuluĹź et al., 2017). It should be noted that there are standard communication features that all people use both in everyday communication and the workplace. The first useful and precious skill is the ability to listen to the participants of the conversation. This is the first communicative trait that a successful leader should possess. The listening skill also implies maintaining eye contact.

This communication behavior skill also implies a desire to fully and clearly understand what the interlocutor wants to convey. Thus, people can correctly form their attitude to the participants of the conversation, and they are allowed to understand the problem or topic under discussion and come to the right decision. Sometimes people in a conversation can get so carried away with what they would like to say that they forget to listen, which means that they may not contribute anything useful to the conversation

Clear Thoughts

The second necessary behavior and skill that a successful communicator should possess is the ability to clearly and distinctly explain his or her thoughts. This implies the absence of unnecessary information in speech, unnecessary words, and expressions, which can complicate the process of perceiving that people go to betray the interlocutor. Thus, this behavior should convey a message with as few words as possible without losing meaning. A lengthy and unclear discussion of a topic or problem can sometimes lead to a loss of interest in the interlocutor, so it is better to speak briefly.

Confidence

Confidence is the following necessary behavioral characteristic when communicating. The main factor that occupies the central place is a person’s nonverbal communication. This is because most people communicate in this way, so body language is of great importance. If we consider verbal communication, it is also critically important to maintain a confident position and a clear and formed speech, which will play an important role. Thus, confidence is a crucial factor in success and productivity. This behavior also includes showing enthusiasm and passion in what people say. Henceforth, the interlocutor should be guided by his or her opinions, beliefs, and priorities.

Empathy

The manifestation of empathy towards the interlocutors should also be empathy. Good interlocutors know that to cope well with disagreements and discussions, it is necessary to have the skills of empathy for another person. Empathy is considered an effective tool when communicating with other people, as it implies the ability to understand the point of view of another person (Cairns et al., 2021). In some cases, it can also mean the ability to better resist the opposite view or bring the conversation to a more productive level. Thus, empathic communicators are also able to correctly identify their audience, and they spend time getting to know people.

Self-awareness

The last crucial behavioral quality that has value in communication both in everyday life and in the workplace is self-awareness. Therefore, successful communicators can identify and understand their contribution to the conversation and the decision-making or problem-solving process. Moreover, they know how best to help the flow of dialogue and bring it to the desired result. Self-awareness also implies knowing when a contribution is needed and when it is best to give the floor to others. Suppose the interlocutors can highlight the skills of another person who is better prepared to solve the communication problem. Teamwork can help in this, which will ensure that there are no problems with communication in the workplace or everyday life.

Communication Style

Behavior is one of the components of the most significant aspects of effective communication. The communication style implies the development of a strategy to achieve goals, solve problems and make decisions. I think that the most successful style in such a case becomes assertive. It has several features of passive, aggressive, and passive-aggressive styles while integrating them (Bocar, 2017). Communicators using this style can openly and honestly share their emotions, thoughts, and values without infringing on the rights and feelings of other people. Thus, they are honest and straightforward in expressing their thoughts and convey the necessary information clearly and clearly. Active listening, the establishment of organic communication, honesty and straightforwardness, and understanding of their own and others’ feelings characterize assertive-style communicators.

Personal Style Traits: Empathy

Self-evaluation showed that traits that people feel are congruent with their communication and that can be improved are empathy and self-awareness. This is because sometimes when communicating with others, I can speak out too harshly and hurt the feelings of another person. To improve this feeling, it is necessary to learn how to notice in time if the interlocutors are not in the mood to talk. Moreover, a helpful step may be to expand the circle of communication to better understand different people and avoid hasty judgments. This is because I can get acquainted with different cultures, views, and opinions.

Personal Style Traits: Self-awareness

Self-awareness is also my weak side. It implies awareness of one’s personality or individuality. In other words, it is the ability to reflect and evaluate character, feelings, motivation, and desires. As mentioned above, this is an essential component of behavior ineffective communication. To improve it, it is necessary to develop and clearly understand the values and constantly follow them. Moreover, this step also implies setting clear boundaries that cannot be crossed by both sides of the communication.

Conclusion

The ability to conduct effective negotiations and use different styles and behaviors of successful communication is important not only for work but also for everyday life. Their development and continuous improvement are necessary for each person to achieve their goals. In my opinion, the most effective and productive style of communication is the assertive communication style since it combines several valuable features of other types at once. However, to improve the existing way of communication, a person also needs to develop behavioral traits. Such as the ability to listen, to have confidence in what people are saying, and to express themselves clearly and clearly.
