Effective leadership is crucial for a successful nursing career since it enhances cordial relationships and a positive working environment. As a diverse profession, nurses may find themselves in situations that need creative and effective leadership skills. Therefore, nurse leaders should be on the frontline in advocating for positive behaviors. Leading by example and integrity are some of the positive leadership skills that nurses should embrace (Houser & Player, 2007). Clara Barton was one of the most influential nurses who led by example. Therefore, influential nurse leaders are significant for healthcare organizations and society at large.
Credible nursing leaders lead by example and act in a manner that is in agreement with their beliefs. Clara Barton, a pioneer nurse leader, led by example when she took part in helping her country, the U.S., during the Civil war (Dromi, 2021). Additionally, as a Red Cross founder, played a significant role in providing medical services to vulnerable communities and in times of disaster (Dromi, 2021). By leading as an example, Clara Barton encouraged many nurses to take part in community services and use their skills in times of catastrophes. Therefore, Clara Barton was a problem solver, influential, and people-centered nurse leader.
The principle of effective nursing leadership can positively boost my career in medical care. I can, therefore, integrate the principles in various ways for successful career development. I can take part in volunteer community healthcare services. For instance, giving free healthcare consultations to students in my local area high schools will allow me to put my skills into practice. Moreover, taking part in research activities that help in solving community healthcare issues can allow me to contribute to positive social growth. Furthermore, as a nurse leader, I can consult my people when making critical decisions that are impactful to our organization. Taking part in community activities and consulting my peers will help me advance my career as a nurse leader.
