Information retrieval requires it to be organized in a database. Information is arranged into data structures that facilitate data collection with database management system DBMS. DBMS ensures that data collected is stored and managed in a high level of quality. DBMS ensure that data available is of quality, and easy to use. There is a massive amount of Data collected in Abu Dhabi municipality. Abu Dhabi municipality has numerous departments, which handles junks of information on external and internal compositions of the populations (Ramarkrishnan, 1997).
Database Structures Used in Various Department
Abu Dhabi municipality encompasses four database management structures: network, hierarchical, relational, and object-oriented.
This database operates mainly on mainframe computers as used by Abu Dhabi municipality for more than 20 years. It involves data organization in a pyramid like pattern where the top component in the pyramid is the root for all the other data underneath. This implies that all data found on lower pyramid level depend on the data above them. Abu Dhabi applies this pyramid form of organizing and managing data in various departments, specifically in registration and health (Lu, 1999).
Registration department in Abu Dhabi municipality focuses on collecting and storing of data on rate of population. The information collected is significant when it comes to planning for services needed by the residents. Abu Dhabi organization uses a database that organizes information on population with similarities in a concurrent manner starting from top to bottom. For example, such information includes the total number of residents in the municipality, followed by the number of households, number of members found in those households, and the links spread and become broader downwards the list. Such organization helps significantly in managing and retrieving information when needed in the planning process.
Network database shows chain of connection on data in a cobweb manner. It shows how different information links to a different department in a database management system. Network database is similar to hierarchical database but have some noted difference, in that, it spread in a cobweb manner rather that spreading downward. Information from one segment might be linked to various segments in different directions, as opposed to hierarchical structure where information connects in one dimension. Abu Dhabi municipality significantly applies this structure in relating information across different departments. This helps to measure the department overall performance, which is crucial in time of planning and budgeting for the municipal expenses (Pallaw, 2010).
Relational database in a key element, in storing data, it entails arrangement of data in tables, where each table contains data that relates. The numbers of relations found in a certain set of data determine the tables to be used, and arrange in their order of hierarchy. As a result of the complex nature of data available in various departments in Abu Dhabi municipality, relational database relates the information and stores in an organized manager way, for easy retrieval.
Object-oriented database handles complex data in the form of audio, video, images and other objects representing data. It forms the most commonly used means of managing structured data. Object-oriented system requires data to be split and organized in structured categories that can fit in rows and columns. It entails the use of database software that aids in managing data, in complex form. Abu Dhabi municipality widely uses object-oriented database to structure and categorize data in different departments. Data from different departments exists in many forms: images, graphs, audio, and much more. This data require a complex structure to organize the data for easy use and retrieval. This has necessitated Abu Dhabi to apply object-oriented database system and effectively manage the large and complex amount of data from various departments.
Types of Transaction Processing Possible With these Databases
Transaction executes the corresponding change in a database management system. Transaction processing initiates through the abstraction of a transaction by use of a special program in order to effect changes in DBMS. Various designs of the transaction process can be used, for example, On-line Transaction Processing (OLTP) and On-line Analytic Processing (OLAP) (Pathak, 2008).
OLAP efficiently analysis data in a warehouse that helps significantly in decision making procedure in Abu Dhabi municipality. OLAP analyses all the historical data stored in various structural forms by involving complex data queries from a data warehouse. This aids enormously in organizing and managing data in Abu Dhabi municipality. OLAP program manages all the information stored in Abu Dhabi municipality departments and organizes it. Some errors cannot be avoided while entering data in different database structures. OLAP plays a crucial role in ensuring transaction processing functions accordingly, and corresponds to changing mistakes at command initiated. OLAP demands a considerable level of skills and technique to operate, it also require expertise in case of outage. Therefore, despite having many advantages OLAP still have some limitations which need to be rectified. Abu Dhabi should use multi transaction processing system to ensure it does to contradict normal functioning when one system runs out.
