The Airbnb Company’s Use of the Internet of Things

Introduction

The internet of things (IoT) is a network that enables items outfitted with sensors, software, and other technologies to connect and share data with other networks and devices on the internet. This incidence is explained by embedded systems and the convergence of other technologies. The phrase “Internet of Things” refers to the common practice of connecting numerous devices to the internet. The Internet of Things, for example, is comparable to the market for smart home equipment. Lighting fixtures, home security systems, cameras, and smart TVs are just a few devices that may be controlled remotely via a smartphone or other Internet-enabled device. There is a developing global workforce that is fully digital. Healthcare monitoring systems incorporating IoT are a great example of how this technology is being used to better people’s lives.

Multiple pieces of equipment monitor a massive amount of data in a few seconds. More connection between VR and the actual world is now conceivable, as devices can be remotely controlled via a particular network cloud. The Internet of Things (IoT) will increase productivity and accuracy in economic service. This study explores how Airbnb should use the Internet of Things (IoT) as a product for home automation. The primary target audience is homeowners renting their properties on the Airbnb platform. The article focuses on offering suggestions for smart technology services that can help them increase bookings by providing a higher level of service and better informing their guests about the benefits and drawbacks of the services.

Product Proposal

A wide range of applications for the Internet of Things devices can be classified into three environments: consumer, business infrastructure, and industrial. Many IoT goods, such as home automation systems, connected vehicles, and other electronic gadgets with remote control capabilities, have been designed with individual consumers in mind (Barns 148). The bright house is the product that is recommended in this case.

The IoT is quickly becoming an essential component of home automation systems. These systems are examples of lighting, air conditioning, internet security, and surveillance cameras. Long-term benefits of IoT in intelligent home automation include better energy savings by turning off lights and other equipment when not in use (Barns 151). Home automation increases safety and convenience while reducing energy use by allowing the Internet of Things to manage intelligent home appliances. Intelligent home gadgets work together to complete tasks by exchanging data, enabling automation tailored to the preferences of forward-thinking homeowners.

The Proposed Product

The Amazon Echo devices are the proposed internet of things product in this research project. Alexa is a sound-activated smart speaker that performs a wide range of functions with the assistance of Alexa, an artificially intelligent personal assistant. This device searches the internet for answers, plays games, listens to music with lyrics, sets alarms, monitors other “smart” gadgets, listens to music, plays games, and does several other tasks.

The Google Nest Hub, which serves as an intelligent home controller, is another component. The user’s schedule may be accessed and altered, reminders can be changed, a shopping list can be made, and the tool can also take phone calls. The Google Nest can operate a wide range of devices, including lighting, cameras, and televisions. Nest is compatible with approximately 5,000 intelligent devices from over 400 well-known manufacturers, such as a front porch camera (Huraj et al. 5298). Many homeowners are installing devices in their houses to manage better and simplify their day-to-day lives.

Building the Smart Home

The establishment of a home market and the invention of various technological designs made this possible. Appliances such as the Amazon Echo, Google’s Net, and the Apple Home Kit are effective in resolving a variety of problems experienced by homeowners. In addition, small business owners have benefited from using these products. This is only the beginning of the technology that will be developed in the future. IOTs have led to an improvement in people’s ability to interact with the technology present in their smart homes. These devices are not restricted to connecting devices found within a house merely; rather, they can link to other devices, such as lights, fans, and the news, and even inform the owner about what is located within the cooling system (Huraj et al. 5298). Most houses already have internet connections set up for their internet of things devices.

These installations are considered primary requirements for newly built residential properties. People in this situation can communicate with other building residents without leaving their rooms thanks to the installation of eco and Nest devices throughout the structure. The devices are simple to use in comparison to other products on the market at the moment. The user interface allows all users, regardless of age, to create and save phone numbers (Huraj et al. 5298). Instead of pressing buttons on the screen, users can type their responses. A locked phone number can be unlocked by simply saying its name.

Internet of Things devices has the potential to completely transform a person’s life by lowering their monthly electricity bill and giving them a sense of freedom and security. A few insurers will discount buyers if they have smart home devices. Insurance companies confirm that these devices will help to reduce the risk of injury or death, reduce the severity of emergencies, reduce the risk of theft, and ensure that homes and businesses remain secure and reliable. Customers and the Amazon cloud communicate via a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) for the Alexa service. When it comes to investigations, stored evidence is extremely valuable and provides certain individuals with a sense of security.

Since Airbnb homes are accessible to customers with a wide range of medical conditions, automated reminders are beneficial for reminding elderly customers of important events, appointments, and medication schedules. Smart lighting allows the elderly to control their lights with their smartphones, remote controls, or motion sensors, which is beneficial for people who have difficulty moving around. Smart cameras strategically placed throughout the home can provide caregivers and family members with real-time images and audio (Jat et al. 106). It will allow them to respond more effectively in an emergency.

Smart thermostats remember the temperature settings that users prefer and maintain them throughout the day. Users can change their settings anytime by using their tablets or smartphones. When older people use other appliances, automatic appliances ensure that the appliances turn off after a predetermined amount of time (Jat et al. 108). It is significant because older adults frequently forget to turn off their appliances.

Automated doors and locks enable family members and caregivers of the elderly to check and see if the older adult’s doors are locked before leaving the house using apps on their tablets or smartphones. It contributes to the elderly person’s safety. Furthermore, they use fingerprint memory to grant access to trustworthy friends and family members. Lastly, the medication-dispensing devices are programmed to deliver the medication at the correct time. It ensures that sick people who rent Airbnb homes get the correct dose at the right time. Clients who stay in Airbnb homes will discover that it is possible to conduct business even in locations far from where they usually reside.

When using Google Nest, users can order daily necessities and make purchases using Google Assistant on their tablets or smartphones. Electronic commerce applications can be used to complete these transactions. Users can use voice commands to track the status of their orders, from when they were packed to when they were in transit to when they were completed. Voice commands can add products one at a time to a user’s shopping basket, select alternative options if an item is out of stock, make payments, or cancel orders. Voice commands can also be used to track the status of an order from the time it was packed to when it arrived.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is yet another fantastic creation by Nest. It uses machine learning to control the temperature in a home’s various appliances, and it was developed using this cutting-edge technology. The thermostat controls various home appliances, including the air conditioner, refrigerator, lights, and fans. This device contributes significantly to reducing energy and electricity consumption and, more importantly, the manual regulation of home appliances. The Artificially Intelligent devices place a greater emphasis on quality, and this speaker is renowned for having a remarkably crisp and clear voice compared to other devices (Purao et al.).

In a similar vein, in contrast to Amazon Echo, Sonos speakers have much more prominent and higher-quality speakers (Purao et al.). These speakers are designed to be utilized as in-home speakers, and they are linked to one another via a safe and reliable mesh network.

When safety and privacy factors are considered, the safety of one’s home is one of the most challenging concerns to address. This area can be significantly improved with artificially intelligent devices and systems. These safety devices include the Netatmo security cameras, which are used to ensure that all of its goings-on, inside and out, are under control (Jat et al., 110). One can easily open and close the door and quickly receive the alarming condition instantly thanks to this feature, which transmits live video to the security screens installed inside the home and is connected through Wi-Fi to the phone application.

Pros and Cons

Installation devices for the Internet of Things have repeatedly proven their worth. They can manage demanding schedules, simplify tasks like online payments, and improve people’s quality of life, especially those with disabilities. When investigating a crime, the devices are reliable sources of evidence. Since the evidence is stored on the network, investigators can quickly request it from Amazon if they have the owner’s permission (Sivapriyan et al. 118). A significant advantage is that activation does not require the user to press any buttons in any way (Sivapriyan et al. 135). It is possible to issue commands solely through verbal communication, such as by saying “Alexa.” A person at work can save time and money by regulating the thermostat temperature by logging into the account and changing the temperature over the phone and can be accomplished remotely.

On the other hand, there are several concerns about the risks posed by the IoT’s expansion, particularly regarding security and confidentiality. As a result, the government and manufacturers have begun to address these concerns, including standards development. It was not difficult to find Alexa integrations in various brands of intelligent entertainment systems at the consumer electronics show, including automobiles, kitchens, robots, and other intelligent entertainment systems (Sivapriyan et al. 127).

People who value their privacy will be troubled by the fact that all of these devices can record audio and video. Most manufacturers guarantee that such information will not be disclosed, but others have demonstrated that information is being shared without the owner’s permission. In 2015, for example, Samsung televisions were discovered to have leaked unprotected user data over a network (Sivapriyan et al. 154). Due to privacy concerns, using voice-activated home appliances such as the Amazon Echo or Google’s Nest could be called into question. Another primary source of concern is the possibility of being hacked. A recent incident involved a person successfully compromising an Amazon Echo to turn it into an eavesdropper, raising concerns about the privacy laws of recording people without their consent.

Conclusion

Even though these items have been available for purchase for some time, their prices have dropped significantly in recent years, contributing to the widespread adoption of today’s home automation technology. The Internet of Things has opened previously closed doors for society. Amazon’s Alexa, for example, is a remarkable technological advancement. Using these artificial assistants has significantly improved business efficiency and quality of life.

However, every IoT has both advantages and disadvantages. Since these are still machines, there is always the possibility that they will fail at some point. Furthermore, the devices play a role in invading users’ privacy. Even though these devices have improved over time, an individual still requires them. To research and understand the various aspects of this technology, homeowners, tenants, and business owners, such as Airbnb, may use voice control to control devices and set personal preferences to ensure that customers get value for their money. They provide a sense of safety and security to everyone in the house, which is hugely comforting.
