Advantages and Disadvantages of Industry, Science and Technology


Science can be defined as the unbiased study of both the living and non-living things around us. It involves a systematic process of observing, identifying, describing, conducting an experiment, and giving a possible speculative interpretation of the natural phenomena under study. Contrastingly, technology is a branch of knowledge dealing with implementing scientific knowledge to produce goods and services that enhance the general way of life. Science and technology are interrelated, as shown by their relationship whereby science applies the knowledge of technology to develop new inventions and innovations.

The technology applies the knowledge of science to perform experiments before launching an innovation. In contrast, the technology applies scientific knowledge to develop strategies that will help solve existing and upcoming global problems. In contrast, industries are various organizations that deal with the production and supply of goods and services to the community. This paper aims at reflecting the key advantages and disadvantages of science, technology, and industries.

Advantages of Science, Technology, and Industries

Science and technology have propagated globalization, increasing the civilization of westernized countries, including the United States of America and the globe in general. Innovations and inventions in the communication and transport sector have been evidenced around the world. For instance, new platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have been developed, linking individuals worldwide. Modes of transport have been developed in which an individual can move from one point to the other faster by use of technologized modes compared to the past in which people used camels and carriages as transport (Nunes et al. 278). For instance, I can move from the United States to Africa using a flight for a short time compared to the previous times.

Comparing the current means of transport to the standard means, including riding animals, walking long distances, and crafting rafts out of logs, science through technology has provided faster means such as automobiles and airplanes. Besides, ships and cars have been invented by science through technology which is more comfortable, fast, and reliable. In contemporary times, science has fused with technology to help construct new structures in towns leading to the growth of towns and cities. For instance, New York City has fashioned structures that make it a great city across the world. In the past where the Roman Empire grew due to the founding of the Italian City of Rome.

Additionally, science has intertwined with technology to help manufacture new weapons in industries used by the military to fight against terrorists. The knowledge of weapon manufacture combines science and technological skills (Chai and Willy 149). For instance, in a fight between the US and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union had sophisticated weapons to win the war. Contemporarily, the United States has won wars that have enabled them to become a superpower across the globe. It has scientists who are well equipped with the required technology to manufacture the weapons.

As a result, the industries have provided job opportunities to individuals across the globe. During the pre-colonial periods, the slaves worked in industries in western countries such as the US. Individuals were forced into slavery to work in firms and industries, but technology brought about robotics which minimized human power. Contextually, science and applied technology have helped fight against COVID-19. From my perspective, individuals should prioritize the industries involved in manufacturing vaccines across the world. Besides, the firms manufacturing medications create job opportunities for people to improve their living standards. Finally, scientists have applied the knowledge of technology to identify the physical and chemical components of space.

Disadvantages of Industry, Science and Technology

Regardless of the mentioned advantages of science and technology, they can also have some disadvantages. Firstly, technology has increased over-reliance on social media, which attracts the attention of individuals, making people forget those who are close to them. The over-use of social media has limited physical interconnections as people interact with their online friends more, thereby neglecting those dearest and closest to them.

From the data, it is clear that only on social media can one be desperate and happy at the same time. Additionally, the adoption of machines and robots in industries has resulted in inadequate job opportunities (Chai and Willy 153). Many companies and industries rely on robots and machines because they make work fast and more accessible, reducing the chances of work opportunities across westernized countries. I disapprove of machines like robots because they can complete a lot of work quickly, making it difficult for humans to get employment opportunities of poor quality.

Additionally, in the education sector, examination irregularities have increased on the onset of technology across the globe. Most students rely on Google for getting information to work out their assignments which minimizes their future creativity, inventions, and practical innovations (Nunes et al. 270). Cases of cheating in exams have increased over the years as multiple students sneak into exam halls with smartphones to search for the examinations asked in the examination papers.

Cyber security and hacking have increased among westernized countries because there is increased hacking and cyberbullying across the globe. Cyberbullying, which involves sharing false, negative, mean, or harmful information about someone on social media platforms, can be termed humiliation. Technology has led to an increase in immoralities since pornographic materials are freely shared on various platforms. As a result, some individuals who participate in illegal activities may lure underage children into the opportunities to make money (Chai and Willy 154). Industries have increased pollution across the world.

Disposal of waste and other emissions from the industries may cause water, soil, and air pollution, impacting the living and non-living things on the earth. Conclusively, technology, science, and industries have positive and negative aspects to the earth’s surface. Improvement in communication and transport, growth of trade and industries, new inventions, and creativity across the globe are some of their core advantages. However, pollution, cyberbullying, overreliance on technology are their limitations. Scientists should consider technology to be a significant evolutionary aspect of science because it evolves from scientific knowledge.
