Working With and Leading People Assignment

Benefits of Team-working in the Organization

In modern managerial techniques, teams play a critical role in accomplishing organizational goals and objectives. A number of organizations prefer using groups in realizing their aims mainly because of their effectiveness. In other words, teams are applied in every sector, including the education sector, health, and small-scale enterprises. The success of any organization depends on how well it would able to use teams in executing its duties.

Every human resource department in various organizations is struggling to put up groups since they are known to bring workers together with the aiming of accomplishing a common goal. Based on this, many organizations would make team knowledge one of the requirements of employment. In case an organization notices that an individual is a good team player, chances are higher that such an individual would be recruited to spearhead team formation.

An individual working under a team would tend to accomplish general goals as opposed to specific goals. These generalized goals benefit the organization most. This shows that teamwork plays various roles in strengthening the organization. West noted that one of the benefits of teamwork is that each member of the group would have a clearly defined role and target (44). Therefore, an individual would be working knowing that he or she should attain a certain objective or target within a specified time.

Moreover, teamwork encourages even distribution of roles, based on professionalism and expertise. In some cases, employees of the organization might be given responsibilities based on their wages and remuneration, but teamwork encourages each person to start the area in which he or she is best. This would mean that the organization would definitely benefit from the dexterities of each employee, leading to improved service delivery.

If each employee is assigned responsibilities based on his expertise, this would mean that the workload would be reduced and the worker would be able to participate fully in the assigned role since he or she understands it well. In the end, the organization would benefit from improved decision-making and effective communication since employees would be motivated to realize their organizational objectives.

Research shows that approaching organizational tasks using teams encourages result-oriented operations. This is mainly because each person has the freedom of generating an idea without interruption from other team members. If this happens, an individual would be encouraged that he or she is part of the organization. In modern managerial techniques, the formation of teams is very easy, even though it needs a lot of support from the top management. Employees should be allowed to form teams based on their choices and preferences since people do not easily gel.

Role of an individual employee in a team working as a leader and a member

For a team to flourish, it needs a stable, hardworking, futurist, and imaginative leader. Scholars of management underscored the fact that a true leader should always act as an example meaning that he or she should lead from the front. For this to happen, the leader should be an active member of the team. Through this, the leader would inspire the group to achieve some of the objectives that were initially thought to be beyond reach.

A leader should always act as a source of encouragement to a team while at the same time ensuring that the rules and regulations are maintained. In this regard, the team leader should strike a balance between maintaining the morale and team spirit and ensuring that the standards of the organization are preserved (Marks, John, and Stephen 12). In the organization that I currently work, I lead a team of five employees since I am a field operations manager.

Fields manager

From the chart, the group is small but is highly organized. Whenever I convene a meeting to discuss some of the challenges facing the team, the views of each member count. Each team member is aware of his or her roles. The assistant in charge of finances ensures that the funds allocated to the section are utilized the best way. The one in charge of customers resolves issues affecting organizational clients before they escalate into bigger issues.

The information officer ensures that all relevant data is conveyed to various clients and employees in time. Since my role as a field manager is to engage with customers, one of the assistants oversees the performance of junior officers. The assistant in charge of marketing ensures that my department achieves its missions in terms of sales.

Review of Effectiveness of the team in realizing its objectives

As earlier noted, each member of my team has a clearly defined role that he or she has to accomplish in the best way possible. There is a general agreement among team members that the department would only achieve its goal if each member aspires to deliver the best result. This is possible since each team member is assigned roles based on expertise and educational background. The major aim of team formation is to bring together the skills and talents, which would contribute to the accomplishment of organizational goals in the best way.

This would be possible through the adoption of a clear management style, equitable distribution of work, and creative problem-solving techniques. Since the team is made up of professionals, realizing its goals is not a problem. Based on the previous results, the group exceeds the expectations because of its quality organization. The group has been able to realize its goals because the transformational leadership style is applied. This style encourages the division of labor and specialization, which would further encourage innovation. The group has been able to realize its objectives because of the strong working relationship between the leader and other officers. The team encourages professionalism and expertise meaning that logic is always applied in addressing issues.

Factors involved in planning the monitoring and assessment of work performance

An organization that evaluates the performance of each employee would probably achieve its aims and objectives. In this regard, each organization is encouraged to come up with an evaluation and monitoring tool to ensure that employees are kept at their toes. A well-funded research and development department should be established to ensure that relevant data regarding the performance of the organization is obtained in time. This would allow constructive policymaking and implementation.

For the effective management of human resources, the concerned department should be involved in constant monitoring and assessment of each employee. This could better be accomplished through evaluation of the achievements of each employee, including his or her current performance standards. Additionally, the organization should set targets for each employee whereby those meeting the targets are rewarded through salary increment and promotion while those found to be underperforming are demoted, taken for further training, or even sacked.

For effective monitoring and evaluation, communication tools should be updated whereby feedback is guaranteed. On many occasions, an organization fails to monitor the performance of employees mainly because of defective tools and techniques. Therefore, monitoring and evaluation instruments should always be up to date.

Planning the assessment of the development needs of each individual employee

Employees are always in need of new skills and information because of the changes brought about by agents of globalization, such as technology and modernity. Customer needs are always changing meaning that the organization needs to train its staff to ensure that it catches up with technological developments. Training needs vary from one employee to the other and from one organization to the other. However, the determination of these needs should be done at certain levels. Each level would result in some expected standards, as explained in the diagram below.

Levels of Analysis Expected Standards Detail
Comprehensive analysis High standards Each position and each responsibility should be evaluated fully in order to classify the expertise and form of information that would improve the performance of employees
Key Tasks High standard At this level, only those forms of information and skills that would directly improve the performance of the employee are considered
Problem-oriented Acceptance or satisfaction Under this level, the management would be considered with evaluating the major issues affecting employees in delivering the desired result
Manual skills satisfaction Analyzing specific manual skills
Fault analysis satisfaction Conducted to establish the sources of faults
Interpersonal Skills analysis Satisfaction Meant to improve face-face communication

Evaluation of Current Performance appraisal process

There is a need for an organization to ensure that all assessment criteria are observed. This is made possible using the performance appraisal process. While preparing the instrument, the management needs to ensure that it is fair relevant, and attainable. The assessment instrument should be able to measure the ability of each employee. For performing employees, the indicators would be ticked based on their strength while underperforming ones would also be identified.

However, it should be made clear that the process of assessment is an inclusive activity whereby the management informs employees in time. It would be unethical to carry out a sensitive activity, such as evaluation, without involving employees. The following represents a sample of an assessment instrument that could be used in any organization.

Performance criteria or standards The assessment process specifics or remarks
Efficiency Relevant Shows the purpose of conducting a review on the performance of employees
Effectiveness Fair This is an indicator suggesting that the system ought to be consistent in judging the effectiveness of the employee
Economical Great intention This means that resources were spent well and time was managed properly. An organization is always under pressure to deliver quality services within a specified time and with certain resources
Elegance Cooperation Proves that there is elegance in the evaluation process, which aims at establishing the best method for arriving at a result-oriented management technique
Ethically Fair Should treat people in a humane way meaning that people’s values and norms should be respected
