đź“Ś Resource-Based View of the Firm: Definition & Basics
Before going into details, it is necessary to understand the definition of RBV and its significance for the company. Let’s try to break it down!
What Is Resource-Based View?
The resource-based view of the firm is a theory that emphasizes the importance of resources in achieving improved business performance. These resources may include tangible and intangible assets and must be heterogeneous and immobile. Using the VRIO framework, companies can leverage these elements to create a sustainable competitive advantage.
Why Is Resource-Based View Important?
An evaluation of the company’s resources is often ignored but must be taken into account when building strategies. This is where the significance of the resource-based view comes in. RBV recognizes that if a resource is valued, it may provide a competitive edge to a business. The company can then examine possible resources that will assist it and allow it to succeed in new markets.
When to Use the Resource-Based View?
A resource-based view strategy is an approach that enables a company to assess its personnel and establish its organizational strengths and weaknesses. In recent years, the RBV model has advanced to better describe how internal strategic resources and skills enable organizations to achieve excellent long-term performance.
đź’° Resource-Based View: Types of Resources
The RBV model is about using internal resources or assets to gain a competitive advantage. These resources are critical in helping firms achieve better levels of performance. The two main types of resources are tangible and intangible assets.
Tangible Assets
These assets are physical and measurable. Monetary capital, land, and buildings are all tangible assets. But since these resources are readily available, tangible assets tend to provide little benefit in the long run. Rival companies may acquire similar assets, leveling the competitive playing field.
Intangible Assets
Intangible assets are resources that are non-physical in nature but can be owned and acquired. Intellectual properties, brand reputation, patents, and trademarks are examples of intangible assets. They are typically found within the company and, as such, are frequently the key to a firm’s long-term competitiveness.
🚀 The Assumptions of RBV
The two fundamental assumptions of RBV are that resources must be heterogeneous and immobile. These are critical aspects of strategic management and essential to transforming a short-term competitive edge into a sustainable one.
Heterogeny
The primary assumption is that companies differ in resources, capabilities, and skills. If all companies have the same resource capacities, they could not outperform each other. In contrast, companies with heterogeneous workers can outrank each other by implementing different strategies unique to the organization’s profile.
Great examples of heterogeny are Apple and Samsung. They operate in the same competitive market, but their organizational performance varies.
Immobility
The second assumption is that resources are not mobile and do not move from company to company. Because of immobility, one company could not have the other’s resources and copy the same strategies.
Intangible assets, such as patents and trademarks, are some of the immobile resources of a company. An excellent example of resource immobility is Southwest Airlines’ unique rags-to-riches story.
The resource-based view theory has its advantages and disadvantages. But since competition is always at the heart of businesses, it is a great way to assess and examine how to use resources to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.
đź“Š Resource-Based View Analysis Example of Coca-Cola Company
In this analysis, we will apply the RBV framework to Coca-Cola Company, a multinational beverage company.
In conclusion, we can see that the company has significant tangible and intangible resources as well as organizational capabilities that contribute to its competitive advantage. The company’s strong brand image, intellectual property, and skilled workforce are some of its most significant assets, along with its sophisticated supply chain management, marketing expertise, and innovative product development.
